A Work-Focused Volunteer Opportunity

Engaging in productive service for the benefit of others is the main focus of the Odiyan community. The combination of our rigorous schedule, ambitious goals, all-volunteer teams and group work environment provide excellent opportunities for meaningful contribution and the development of positive inner qualities. We challenge ourselves to grow in the areas of generosity, mindfulness, discipline, concentration, patience, responsibility, and cooperation.

In addition to developing technical skills, Odiyan stimulates the expansion of professional attributes such as decision-making, leadership, communication, project management, organizing teams, working independently, overcoming obstacles and problem solving.

Odiyan is a hard-working, peaceful, tobacco/drug-free community. About 40-60 volunteers are in residence at any one time, ranging in age from 20 to 70 years. Approximately 65% are male and 35% are female. Most residents/volunteers are American lay people (not monks nor nuns) from all over the United States. Community members from affiliated Nyingma centers in California, Holland, Germany, and Brazil also often join Odiyan projects.

Work at Odiyan is both challenging and deeply satisfying.

Your offering of time and energy will be well rewarded with richer self-understanding and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts help to sustain a unique tradition of wisdom for the benefit of all humanity.

If you are ready to challenge yourself, you can learn such valuable skills as welding, construction, casting, electrical wiring, plumbing, gardening, landscaping, and sewing.

Housing, vegetarian meals and $150/month stipend provided. 12-hour work days. 6 1/2-day work week. Minimum commitment required: 3 months.
