A Work-Focused Place
Engaging in productive service for the benefit of others is the main focus of the Odiyan community. The combination of our rigorous schedule, ambitious goals, all-volunteer teams and group work environment provide excellent opportunities for meaningful contribution and the development of positive inner qualities. We challenge ourselves to grow in the areas of generosity, mindfulness, discipline, concentration, patience, responsibility, and cooperation.
In addition to developing technical skills, Odiyan stimulates the expansion of professional attributes such as decision-making, leadership, communication, project management, organizing teams, working independently, overcoming obstacles and problem solving.
Volunteer
Odiyan offers housing, meals, a $150 monthly stipend and an incredible learning experience to volunteers. There is no need to be Buddhist or to have specific skills to participate. Hands-on experience and training in various technical skills are provided.
All volunteer opportunities are residential stays for a minimum of 6 months in length.
Volunteer positions include all aspects of construction work as well as gardening and major landscaping opportunities, sewing prayer flags, and sacred text preservation. Work on most Odiyan projects requires physical strength and stamina.
While Odiyan is modeled after Tibet’s first monastery, traditional Buddhist practices and formal study are not a main emphasis at Odiyan at this time.
Community
The Odiyan community is comprised of about sixty people who range in age from 20 to 70 years old. Approximately 65% of the resident volunteers are male and 35% are female. Many resident volunteers are American lay people (not monks nor nuns) from all over the United States. Community members from affiliated Nyingma centers in California, Holland, Germany, and Brazil also often join the projects at Odiyan.
All Odiyan residents are volunteers.
Odiyan is a hard-working, peaceful, tobacco/drug-free community, closed to the public.
