Volunteering at the Odiyan Center for various construction projects that include such monumental sacred sites as the Cintamani Temple and the Vairosana Prayer Wheel Garden is a life-changing experience. Volunteers gain valuable work and practical skills, live in a beautiful, wholesome environment and help contribute to the creation of major Buddhist artwork in America. The work is a challenging, full immersion experience that directly teaches the power of positive transformation. The Cintamani Temple is nearing completion and stands in the southern quadrant of the Odiyan Mandala. This historic temple is likely the largest collection of bronze artwork on one building in the Western Hemisphere. Cintamani, which in Sanskrit means Wishfulfilling Jewel, preserves enlightened symbols that embody humanity's aspirations for peace on earth. Surrounding Cintamani is a gallery of prayer wheels, a three-tiered plaza, pre-cast concrete steps fanning out in the cardinal directions and a 10-foot high wall topped with concrete stupas.
The current emphasis of the Odiyan residential volunteer program is heavy construction and major landscaping. The projects are very physically demanding.
